Memphis International Joins TSA Pre✓™ Program
April 1, 2013
MEMPHIS, Tennessee, April 1, 2013 – Memphis International Airport Has now been added to the Transportation Security Administration’s TSA Pre✓™ program. The program, which is expanding to medium-sized airports across the country in 2013, became operational at MEM the first of April.
As described on the TSA website, TSA Pre✓™ is an expedited screening initiative that is expanding to airports across the country. TSA has partnered with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as well as U.S. air carriers as part of this initiative. Certain frequent travelers from Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, US Airways and certain members of CBP's Trusted Traveler programs are eligible to participate when they are booked on a participating airline.
"The TSA Pre✓™ program enhances the overall customer experience at our Terminal "B" checkpoint," said Larry Cox, President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. "It not only makes screening more efficient, it will also improve security by allowing TSA to focus their resources where most needed."
Passengers that are eligible for TSA Pre✓™ screening will be directed by their airline to “B” checkpoint at Memphis International. The "B" checkpoint was recently expanded to double its previous size and transformed in appearance.
If TSA determines a passenger is eligible for expedited screening, information is embedded in the barcode of the passenger’s boarding pass. TSA reads the barcode at designated checkpoints and the passenger may be referred to a lane where they will undergo expedited screening, which could include no longer removing the following items: shoes, 3-1-1 compliant bag from carry-on luggage, laptop from bag, light outerwear/jackets, and belts. In addition, passengers 12 and younger are allowed through TSA Pre✓™ lanes with eligible passengers.
Eligibility generally begins with the airlines. Participating airlines will permit some of their frequent flyers, based on TSA criteria, to opt-in through the airline's system. Participating airlines have contacted eligible frequent travelers with an invitation to opt-in. Once the passenger opts in, the airline identifies the individual as a participant when submitting the passenger reservation information to TSA's Secure Flight system.
