Southwest Airlines Launches Inaugural Flights at MEM

Southwest Airlines launched new flights from Memphis International Airport November 3 that join the carrier’s network through previously established service by wholly-owned subsidiary AirTran Airways. The new routes complete a plan to bring Southwest Airlines service to all domestic cities in the Company’s network by year’s end, as the integration of Southwest and AirTran approaches its final phases. “It is exciting for us to offer Southwest service in this market,” said Southwest Airlines Chairman, President, & CEO Gary Kelly. “We plan to further the extraordinary service that AirTran has offered in Memphis with our traditional low-cost, Fun-LUVing Southwest style.”

“This is a great day for the Memphis and mid-south traveling community,” said Larry Cox, President and CEO of Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. “Southwest Airlines is a premier name in commercial aviation and a company that is respected for its high quality, customer service personality, vision and fair pricing. We begin today with six daily roundtrips and five destinations, but our goal is to become a growing and vital part of the Southwest system with many more flights. It is now up to the leisure and business travelers to show Southwest that we want them, by flying on their airplanes.”
