A new contract for Wi-Fi service was awarded to Boingo Wireless, Inc. that will offer Airport customers complimentary, unlimited Wi-Fi at the speed of 1.5 Mbps. The free service should accommodate the majority of MEM’s passengers who primarily use the internet for reading email or general web surfing. The free service is expected to begin by year-end.
Those who need high-end, high-speed bandwidth for streaming movies or similar activities will have the option to pay for expanded service at 5.0 Mbps to be available under a new tiered pricing structure.
“Free Wi-Fi has been the most requested Airport amenity at Memphis International Airport for many years,” said Airport Authority Chairman Jack Sammons. “In our ongoing pledge to be customer-centric, we have listened to our passengers and are focused on providing them every service we can to improve their air travel experience, and this is a significant step in that.”
With virtually every air traveler using an internet enabling device – smart phone, tablet or computer – having access to free Wi-Fi while traveling has become an important service amenity. MEM was one of the first airports in the country to offer Wi-Fi but for a fee, which was necessary to cover the initial capital outlay by the service provider to install the broadband infrastructure and equipment.
The service will also expand beyond the terminal building to include the new pedestrian plaza walkway to the Ground Transportation Center and the rental car customer service area.
In addition, a new distributed antenna system will be installed that will enhance cellular service in the Terminal, Ground Transportation Center and surrounding areas.
