Pace Cooper Joins MSCAA Board

Distinguished hotelier, businessman, and civic leader Pace Cooper has been appointed to the Airport’s Board of Commissioners filling the vacancy left by the retirement of longtime Chairman Arnold Perl.

Cooper is President and CEO of Cooper Hotels, a leading hospitality development and management company. The company currently owns and manages 21 hotels in seven states, a number of which are near airports. Cooper has earned a respected reputation among those in the travel industry. His experience should make him a valuable contributor to the airport’s board and bring fresh perspective and unique insight for moving the airport forward in an era of dynamic change.

He has a fervent desire to strengthen the airport’s role as one of the most important economic assets in the community. He also shares the same customer focus held by Airport Chairman Jack Sammons and believes the similarities between the airport product and his hotel product will be beneficial to guiding the airport during his service on the board. more »

Vacation Sweepstakes Promotes Use of MEMpark this Summer

Through July, Memphis International Airport is conducting its Park & Escape Sweepstakes, designed to build greater awareness of MEMpark and the convenient and affordable on-airport parking choices at Memphis International Airport, including $6.00 per day economy parking in the new seven-level Ground Transportation Center.

“While many people already enjoy the convenience of the MEMpark parking experience at Memphis International, we know there are still people out there who have not yet discovered the ease and safety that is offered just a convenient walk from the airport terminal,” said Scott Brockman, executive vice president and chief operating officer of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. “During the busy summer travel season, we think this sweepstakes creates a fun way to entice those who have yet to experience what we offer to give our parking a try. We feel confident that once travelers experience all of the options of MEMpark, we will make them repeat customers.” more »

Memphis International Celebrates 50 Years at Current Location

Memphis International Airport celebrates its 50th year at its current location this summer. It was June 7, 1963, when the new $5.5 million terminal was dedicated at the present location south of Winchester Road, and Memphis Municipal Airport was renamed Memphis Metropolitan Airport. The new terminal featured 22 gate positions, allowing enough space for seven airlines to operate daily flights. It was six years later that the airport’s name was changed to Memphis International Airport to reflect its status as a point of origin and entry point for international passengers and cargo. Over the next 12 years, airport terminal capacity would more than double with the addition of Terminal A in 1974 and Terminal C in 1975. more »
