LUV is Here

After years of hard work by many and great anticipation across the Memphis community, Southwest Airlines has now arrived in Memphis. The first Southwest flights began on Sunday, November 3. As the first flight arrived, Memphis International gave Southwest and its first passengers a grand welcome. Those who arrived on the first Southwest flight to land in Memphis were first welcomed with a water arch from the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. Elvis (an Elvis tribute artist) then marshaled the iconic Canyon Blue Boeing 737 to the gate. Once customers deplaned, they walked right into a celebration at the gate where employees and the Elvis tribute artist welcomed them to Memphis.

Then, on Monday, leadership from throughout the Memphis community gathered in the airport for a celebratory welcome that exclaimed in banners and presentations that “Luv is here.”

The Southwest Airlines service begins with flights to five destinations:

• Two daily roundtrips between Memphis and Chicago Midway
• One daily roundtrip between Memphis and Baltimore/Washington
• One daily roundtrip between Memphis and Orlando
• One daily roundtrip between Memphis and Houston
• One daily roundtrip between Memphis and Tampa Bay

“This is a great day for the Memphis and mid-south traveling community,” said Larry Cox, the President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. “Southwest Airlines is a premier name in commercial aviation and a company that is respected for its high quality, customer service personality, vision and fair pricing. We begin today with six daily roundtrips and five destinations, but our goal is to become a growing and vital part of the Southwest system with many more flights. It is now up to the leisure and business travelers to show Southwest that we want them, by flying on their airplanes.” more »
