Fourteen sheer walls that will provide re-enforcement to the airport’s upper inner drive during an earthquake were given an artistic design to make them more visually attractive and put to a practical use by incorporating a bench for customers waiting at curbside for their ground transportation.
The sheer walls are one of four improvements in a $2.1 million project to improve the resiliency of the upper roadway during a seismic event. The other improvements include steel cross bracing, expansion joint tie plates, and carbon fiber reinforced wrapping on support columns. Together, these upgrades should provide controlled movement of the upper drive in a seismic event.
EMJ Corporation is the lead contractor on the project which is nearing completion.
