Native Memphian, entrepreneur, and former Shelby County Commissioner, James Wesley Gibson, II, commonly referred to as J.W., has become the newest member of Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority’s Board of Commissioners.
Gibson is CEO of Gibson Companies, a group of organizations that includes The Premier Group, a medical supply and equipment distribution company; Southeast Regional Development Corp, which focuses on property development and affordable housing; and Tec-Print, a commercial printing firm.
Gibson has long been deeply involved in the Memphis community and brings to the Airport Board both a history of business success and political experience. He is a man of action and achievement who often says that he’s bullish on Memphis and dedicated to improving the community for all its citizens and keeping business local when possible. He is an involved advocate of minority business, and has served as President of the National Minority Medical Supply Association and in the Mid-South Minority Business Council’s Partnership Program. more »
Ultra low-cost airline, Frontier will expand its service from Memphis International in September with four flights a week to Washington Dulles Airport. The service will operate on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday using 168-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.
After a long absence, the carrier returned to the Memphis market in March with service to Denver four times a week. Due to strong initial bookings, Frontier soon announced an upgrade to daily service that begins this month.
“This is a key development in our efforts to expand our frequent and affordable air service at MEM,” said Scott Brockman, President and CEO of the Memphis-Shelby County Airport Authority. “Washington, DC, is one of our most popular destinations, and these flights provide our passengers with a new low-cost option.”
Southwest Airlines has announced that it will add a second flight from Memphis to Houston Hobby Airport beginning November 2 as part of its nationwide expansion.
A previously announced second flight between Baltimore and Memphis began this month.

Each year, the Annual Memphis International Airport Community Foundation High School Visual Arts Competition/Exhibition is one of the highlights and most competitive events for young artists in high schools throughout Shelby County. Now in its seventh season, the competition and exhibition celebrates and promotes Memphis’ legendary culture and shows the promise of Memphis’ newest generation of artists through the theme of “Memphis, Its Music, Sights and Sounds.” For 2014, a total of 273 students answered the call to draw inspiration from Memphis’ culture thru the music, sights, and sounds they experience and to build from that by using their imagination, creativity and individuality to personally express what they view as positive, progressive, and constructive about their hometown. more »
