Airport’s 7th Annual High School Art Competition Winners Selected

Each year, the Annual Memphis International Airport Community Foundation High School Visual Arts Competition/Exhibition is one of the highlights and most competitive events for young artists in high schools throughout Shelby County. Now in its seventh season, the competition and exhibition celebrates and promotes Memphis’ legendary culture and shows the promise of Memphis’ newest generation of artists through the theme of “Memphis, Its Music, Sights and Sounds.” For 2014, a total of 273 students answered the call to draw inspiration from Memphis’ culture thru the music, sights, and sounds they experience and to build from that by using their imagination, creativity and individuality to personally express what they view as positive, progressive, and constructive about their hometown.

From those original entries, large-scale museum-quality original paintings have been created for 45 of the pieces of art. Winners were selected from these 45 pieces. They are now on display for air travelers to view in the airport’s concourse connectors for the next year. The artwork provides an enhanced Memphis feel to the airport and it showcases the remarkably mature creativity of local youth.

Contest winners have been awarded a total of $2,200 in cash prizes for 2014. The Memphis College of Art awarded six, $10,000 per-year renewable scholarships worth potentially $240,000 over four years for the recipients.

Many of each year’s paintings are sold to the public after being on display for a year in the airport. They are purchased directly from the student artists. Those not sold remain the property of the student artist. Also, numerous gift items such as mugs, t-shirts, post cards, etc. that feature the student artwork are offered in the Airport’s retail shops with proceeds from the sales being used to purchase art supplies for the competition.
