Memphis International Airport Continues to be the World's Cargo Leader

For the 15th consecutive year, Memphis International Airport has been named the world's busiest cargo airport based on rankings released by the Airports Council International (ACI), Geneva. According to preliminary rankings, Memphis International Airport handled 3,692,205 tons of cargo during 2006, a 2.6 percent increase over the 3.59 million tons handled during 2005.

Hong Kong International Airport was a close second handling 3,608,789 tons of cargo. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Alaska was ranked third handling 2,803,792 tons. Other United States airports in the top 10 are Louisville, number eight and Los Angeles, number 10.

The numbers released by ACI are the preliminary numbers and may change slightly in June when final figures are released.




 

New Ground Transportation Center To Be Built at Airport

Plans are moving forward to build a Ground Transportation Center on 78 acres at Winchester Rd. and Airways Blvd. to house rental car companies, hotel shuttle buses and potentially even transportation to some of the city's famous attractions… more »

More New Air Services Announced for May

Northwest Airlines recently announced it will expand and enhance service to Denver, Las Vegas, Orlando and Seattle from its Memphis hub.

Northwest will now operate the Airbus A319 and A320 on its flights to Denver. The change from the 50-passenger Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) will add hundreds of additional seats to the route… more »

New Inbound Roadway Scheduled for Completion in November

Blue Suede Service Helps Passengers Around the Airport

Don't know the way to your gate? Want to know where the Blue Note Café is or where you can pick-up a last minute gift? The Blue Suede Service can answer these questions and much more.

The Blue Suede Service is a volunteer group primarily made up from retired Air Transportation personnel. These volunteers have backgrounds as flight attendants, pilots, ticket counter employees, station managers and even as high-level executives. The Blue Suede Service volunteers have a wealth of aviation knowledge and expertise and can be seen roaming the Airport looking for passengers to help… more »
